Longest Bridge over Water in the World: Lake Pontchartrain Causeway - HISTORY OF MANKIND DOCUMENTARY
The Lake Pontchartrain Embankment, in some cases simply the Causeway, is a causeway comprised of two parallel bridges going across Lake Pontchartrain in southern Louisiana, United States. The longer of both bridges is 23.83 miles (38.35 km) long. The southerly terminus of the Causeway remains in Metairie, Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans. The northern terminus is at Mandeville, Louisiana.
Considering that 1969, it was listed by Guinness World Records as the longest bridge over water around the world; in 2011 in feedback to the position of the presumably longer Jiaozhou Bay Bridge in China, Guinness created two groups for bridges over water: constant as well as accumulated sizes over water. Lake Pontchartrain Embankment after that became the longest bridge over water (constant) while Jiaozhou Bay Bridge the longest bridge over water (aggregate).
The bridges are assisted by 9,500 concrete pilings. The 2 bridges include a bascule, which extends the navigation channel 8 miles (13 km) south of the north shore.
